The NRCCFI/FCN gets hundreds of requests weekly, asking for advice or help with a variety of issues related to children of the incarcerated and their families. This new section of our web site – Frequently Asked Questions – is being designed to give those that call or write or e-mail with the most typical questions, an opportunity for a timely answer.
Many of the questions however, are related to specific family or child circumstances. Answering those questions becomes difficult and unwise. So here, we will answer the questions in a general way and hope that these responses are helpful and useful. Questions such as those listed below will be answered by staff and advisors, including family members and service providers.
We encourage web site visitors to use our Directory of Programs and connect with resources in your state in order to locate those that can respond to specific families or circumstances.
Sample Questions this section of the website will address:
1. Should children be told the truth about their incarcerated parent?
2. How do you best prepare children for visits to a prison?
3. Are there college scholarships and other financial supports to children and families of the incarcerated?
4. How can families advocate for themselves and their children for program and policy reform?
