New Series: Systems Serving Children and families of the Incarcerated
We often see written that children of the incarcerated are at a higher risk for entering the criminal justice system than their peers. While there is no study that actually concludes this, researchers are hard at work to clarify the existing data. We also need to engage in new studies that will help us not only to understand the significance of parental incarceration as a risk factor but also to evaluate the influence of those that work in child and family serving systems. Teachers, child welfare workers, health care providers and those in Corrections can be protective factors in the lives of the children and families of the incarcerated. But, they may also intensify the risk of parental incarceration by increasing the shame and stigma, triggering loyalty conflicts and contributing to the conspiracy of silence that keeps families from accessing help and support.
This training-by-telephone series is designed as an overview of issues, concerns and strategies for the 4 primary systems affecting children and families of the incarcerated. Each session will have a host and a variety of presenters that will include corrections officials, teachers, child welfare workers and health and mental health care providers as well as formerly incarcerated parents, children of the incarcerated and caregivers.
